This book takes a bit of reading before it really gets going and you finally figure out what is going on. But once it does it is a fantastic story with excellent character development and a very unique story line. /5(27). ILIUM (drawn from the same subject matter) in a very similar way. It's a tremendous tale of astonishing breadth and complexity that held its shape and rhythm, despite my months-long journey through nearly pages, stolen a few at a time from the wee small hours when I could read only for myself. Ilium is Ilium book best writings since Hyperion. As a standalone book, I would be tempted to say that it's better that Hyperion. But comparisons like that at really hard to make. The stories are very different and will probably appeal to different people, but there can't be any doubt that, the story aside, the writing it self is Simmons : Dan Simmons – Ilium Audiobook Online.
Before the finish of the book, I was skimming the pages and simply needed to get it over with, losing any expectation of even a similarity of determination, since I definitely realized that I’d have to peruse the continuation, Olympos, to get it.
Olympos started off better than its Ilium book, Ilium, mostly because I was already invested in the story, having a novel's worth of exposition out of the way. Other than a bit of clunky exposition that reminds us what happened in the previous novel, and one That is to say, if you want a book that's entertaining and well crafted up until the /5.

The Trojan War rages at the foot of Olympos Mons on Mars -- observed and influenced from on high by Zeus and his immortal family -- and twenty-first-century professor Thomas Hockenberry is there to play a role in the insidious private wars of vengeful gods and goddesses.
Ilium is as good if not better than its predecessor, and it is bound to become a classic of the genre, because Ilium is like nothing you've read before. Simmons has done the impossible by creaing something completely fresh, new and highly interesting.
The book is separated in three major stories that are all loosely linked to one another.5/5(5). Ilium, of course, is another name for ancient Troy, and the tale opens on the blood-soaked plains of that besieged city as the Greek armies carry on their nearly decade-long attack, while Thomas Hockenberry, Ph.D.—“the unwilling Chorus of this tale”—studies the whole affair.

We SF writers and fans often talk about our beloved genre as a ghetto, frozen out by the denizens of 'high literature', despised as popular culture 'entertainment', where Shakespeare and Dickens et al are elite culture.

Ilium is a fictitious town in eastern New York state, used as a setting for many of Kurt Vonnegut's novels. The name most likely refers to Troy, New York ("Ilium" was the name the Romans gave to ancient Troy), although Troy is mentioned as a separate city in Player Piano.
In all other respects, Ilium very closely resembles Schenectady, New York, with the fictional Iroquois Novellas: Sun Moon Star (), God Bless You.
