Chaim Potok was born in New York City in He is the author of nine novels, including The Chosen (), The Promise (), and My Name is Asher Lev (), as well as three plays, three children’s books, and three works of nonfiction. An ordained rabbi, he served as an army chaplain in Korea and received his PhD in philosophy from the University of Pennsylvania. He is author of eight novels, including In the Beginning and My Name Is Asher Lev, and Wanderings, a history of the Jews.

The book’s title is borrowed from 18th century Urdu poet Mir Taqi Mir’s poem about Delhi "where dwelt the chosen spirits of the age"—the city that fate looted and laid desolate. The Chosen is set during World War II – a brutal worldwide war and an especially fraught period in Jewish American history. The novel begins with the Allied offensive in WWII and chronicles the death of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the general public’s and American Jewry's discovery of the horrors of the Holocaust, and the fight for and founding of the Jewish state of Israel.
